Varsity highlights
We made it!
It was a tough day to run. The course was very muddy and
the weather was cold and windy. On a day like this, it was
a good performance if a runner came within 30 seconds of his PR.
As for every race this season, James Naughton was the top finisher
for Pioneer. James took 4th overall with a time of 16:42.
Next was Jeff Hubbard. Jeff was sensational as he earned
all-region honors in 14th place (17:22). While most runners ran
30-60 seconds slower than their PR, Jeff nearly equaled his PR.
Jeff's time was roughly equivalent to 16:50 at Hudson Mills, which is
outstanding. Awesome job Jeff.
Andy Harvey (#17, 17:26), Mike Roth (#29, 17:52), and Takashi
Gould (#30, 17:54) completed the scoring for Pioneer. Each runner
was within 30 seconds of their PR, a solid performance on a very
muddy course.
Soren Berg had a strange race. After 2.5 miles, Soren was the #2
runner for Pioneer and was in the top ten. Then he got a cramp and
slowed dramatically. Soren finally finished as #7 for Pioneer.
Ouch!
This team has talent. If you assume that Jeff's time was
equivalent to 16:50, Pioneer now has 5 runners at 16:50 or better.
Unfortunately, these 5 runners have never all run well at the
same time. This is the challenge going into the state meet.
If everyone runs well, Pioneer will make top 10.
Junior varsity highlights
Updated with complete Jackson JV results
and some additional description of the Jackson JV race.
Most of the team ran on Friday at Jackson. Pioneer dominated this
meet, taking #1, #2, #4, #5 and #8. Marty Everin finished first,
with a time of 18:19. Way to go Marty. Jesper Jarkvist was
2nd (18:33). Sam Milgrom was 4th (18:41), with Alan Antonuk close
behind. Carl Duke ran the only PR, with a time of 18:53.
Max Hospadaruk edged out his brother Luke, which will
give him bragging rights at the dinner table over the winter.
Of course, Luke has the better PR, so there will be something
to argue over.
Here's a description of the race by Coach Andy Ames: "Jesper and
Marty traded off the lead with another runner for the first two
miles, with Sam close behind. Marty made a big move around two miles
and dropped the others and opened up an even bigger lead with a
strong kick. It was very cold and windy. The course was actually in
pretty good shape despite the rain, except for the hill which was a
slippery mess."
Seven runners competed at the JV race at the regional. Morty
was the top finisher with a time 18:36. Nick Wilkenson ran very
well with a time of 19:04.
