Varsity highlights
After a slow start at the Brother Rice invitational, Pioneer
ran well at the first SEC Jamboree. Pioneer placed 2nd of 4 teams
in this meet. Also, Pioneer beat Saline for the first time since
1997. With many personal records (PR) established, it was a
great day for the Pioneers.
Once again, James Naughton led the way. James took 3rd place with
a time 16:32, a PR by 27 seconds. Joe Anderson took 8th place (17:27)
while Andy Harvey rebounded well from Brother Rice and took
9th place (17:32). The top five was rounded out by Soren Berg (17:50) and
Mike Roth (18:00), both of whom established PR's. Freshman Takashi
Gould ran well in his first varsity race, recording 18:01, which is
a PR by 28 seconds.
Junior varsity highlights
It was another great performance in the junior varsity race. Freshman
Mortie Stensones-Fornaess won the JV race with a fine time of 18:03.
Sophmore Jeff Hubbard was not far behind, running 18:18 to take 5th
place. Last Saturday, Jeff started well but faded badly in the last
mile. But today Jeff ran extremely well from start to finish.
Way to go, Mortie and Jeff.
Besides Mortie and Jeff, other first-year runners are emerging.
Sophmore Marty Everin improved from last week by 1:24 and took 16th
place in a time of 18:47. Freshman Walker Rutter-Bowman also showed
dramatic improvement. Walker's time of 19:09 was 1:21 faster than the
previous Saturday.
First year senior, Jesper Jarkvist, ran 18:39
in his very first race. This is an excellent time. Phil Dokas and
Alex Urbanik both improved their times by 1 1/2 minutes. There were
numerous other PR's in the JV race. In all, a total of 15 JV PR's
were set. Great job, JV runners.
