Varsity highlights

The Pioneer team continued their strong start in 2000. Pioneer placed 4th of 20 teams at the Holly Invitational. The meet featured cool weather, but also a muddy course which contained a few "monster" mudholes (see the JV highlights).

Once again, the Pioneers were led by the Johnson and Naughton duo. Matt grabbed 10th place with a time of 17:08. James followed 10 seconds later and took 14th place. The remaining runners also ran strong races. Joe Anderson finished 26th and was followed by Eric Ford-Holevinski (38), Andy Harvey (41) and Nick Piowtrowski (42). Seventh man Mike Roth ran his first varsity race and celebrated with a personal record time of 19:27. It was excellent work by the entire varsity team.

Junior varsity highlights

Pioneer's JV runners were led by Robby Young with a time of 18:30. Robby missed the Brother Rice meet due to injury, but turned in a very solid first effort. Looks like Robby will be back on the varsity team soon.

There is a heated battle going on to become the top sophmore. This week Harvey Acheson ran 19:30, an improvement of 1:21, to become the leading sophmore. But he's closely followed by Kevin Goering (19:31) and Soren Berg (19:52). Who will be on top next week?

There's also a good competition to become the top freshman. This week Parry Garff led the way with a time 20:38, a PR (personal record) by 53 seconds. Close behind was Carl Duke at 20:41, who PR'd by 46 seconds.

A number of other JV runners established PR's this week. The top improvement was made by Kevin Mulholland, who reduced his time by an amazing 3:03. Way to go Kevin. Major PR's were also turned in by Kellan Winbourne (-1:34), Cedric York (-56) and Kota Takahashi (-50). It was an outstanding effort by the entire team today.

Finally, we shouldn't forget the noteworthy crash of Gabe Sanders. Gabe provided a thrill to the entire team by faceplanting in a gigantic mudhole. A bit embarassing perhaps, but, hey, it was a moment Gabe will remember for the rest of his life. Gabe did get up and finish the race.
