SEC Jamboree #3 at Hudson MillsThursday Oct 18, 2007
Varsity Highlights
Pioneer faced its SEC Red Division competitors for the third time and for the third time came up a little short, again taking 2nd place by six points. For the first part of the race, Senior Charlie Cavell, Sophomore Nick Kern, and Junior Dan Culbertson (back from a knee injury that kept him out of action for 3 weeks) stayed as a group near the front of the pack. Charlie staked his claim to 2nd place early in the race and defended his position well, finishing with a time of 16:21. Great job, Charlie! Nick also ran a strong race, finishing in 16:33 for a 4th place finish – another fine finish by this talented sophomore. Their finish places earn both of them “All-Conference” status for 2007 – Congratulations!
Senior co-captains David Cogswell and Taylor DeLuca battled it out for 10th and 11th place. Their pace shifted into a higher gear during the last mile and they finished with times of 16:52 and 16:53, respectively. Dan ran more cautiously than usual and lost some ground as the race went on, but still finished 13th with a time of 16:57. Sophomore Nate Karr gutted out a 15th place finish in 17:04. Right behind him was Sophomore Adam Kern, in 17:06 for 16th place. It's worth noting that all seven Pioneer runners finished faster than Saline's 5th man.
With this second place finish in its third and final SEC meet, Pioneer takes second place in the Red Division for the season. Although disappointed with this finish, Pioneer looks forward to the Regionals with great anticipation.

Junior Varsity Highlights
The threat of stormy weather caused meet officials to rush the race schedule. Teams were on the starting line waiting for the starting gun as soon as the last runner from the previous race crossed the finish line and the clock could be restarted. Our JV race, scheduled for 4:15, was actually started well before 4 o’clock, disappointing several parents who arrived "just-in-time", balancing work-week responsibilities with supporting the team. But considering the large number of student-athletes present and the severity of some of the storms that whipped through Michigan later in the evening, the meet organizers were wise to be cautious.
The earlier start didn’t bother Pioneer sophomore Andy Sanz-Guerrero, who easily won the JV race with a time of 17:24 – congratulations Andy. Senior co-captain Erik Levinsohn, claimed 3rd place with a time of 17:58, a great finish in his second meet of the season (after a battling injuries since pre-season). Senior Kinshuk Rajan ran with the lead pack for much of the race and placed 10th with a time of 18:15. Junior Neil Keicher wasn’t far behind; his 18:18 finish earned him 13th place. Junior Robin Nitzer followed in 14th place with a time of 18:23. Robin has been a fierce competitor this fall, and the team will miss him next year when he returns to Germany for his senior year. Junior David Wallington had missed a few meets due to injuries, and didn’t plan to run at this Jamboree, but his competitive streak proved too strong and he claimed 16th place for the Pioneer JV in 18:26. First-year sophomore Juan Sanchez took 18th place in 18:30. Sophomore Kevin Chaperon got stuck in the thick race traffic (there were about 160 runners in the JV event), but eventually managed to work his way through the crowd and speed it up to finish 24th in 18:41. Sophomore Niko Rombes (18:51) was 29th, Sophomore Joe Frakes (19:05) took 33rd and Sophomore Caleb Fogel tied his PR, finishing 35th in 19:08. Freshman David Torres (19:30) was 47th, and Sophomore Lucas Arias sliced 25 seconds from his PR to finish 50th in 19:33 – congratulations Lucas. Senior Dylan North, back for his first race since Kensington, was 55th in 19:41. Sophomore Mike Sullivant placed 62nd in 19:49 and Sophomore Jonathan Diep placed 63rd in 19:54. Sophomore John Fonte chopped 28 seconds from his PR to clock-in at 20:36 in 86th place – congratulations, John, on a huge improvement. Senior Jacob Whiten finished in 20:48 for 95th place. One more Pioneer who must be congratulated is Sophomore Zack Keller, who slashed 32 seconds from his PR to finish in 23:46 – way to go!The warm, humid air and gusty winds didn’t lend itself to many PRs for the Pioneers today, but it was heartening to see Lucas, John and Zach register large jumps in their PRs this late in the year. The Regional meet next week will be the very last JV meet of the season. Wouldn’t it be awesome to end the 2007 season with a long list of new JV PRs?
