Varsity Highlights
SEC League Jamboree #3 was run on the “classic” spectator-friendly course at Hudson Mills Metropark again this year. It was a damp, cloudy day, with temperatures slowing falling through the upper 40’s during the races, and warm-up clothing once again was shed only at the last possible moment before each race began. The cold proved to be invigorating for the Pioneer Varsity runners: Pioneer took first place, scoring 33 points in our Red Division Men’s Varsity race. Today’s Jamboree win, together with our finishes at the two other Jamborees, means that Pioneer also earned the 2006 SEC Men’s Red Division Championship title.
Sophomore Dan Culbertson ran near the front of the pack most of the race, then poured on the speed during Mile 3, as the two lead Bedford runners began to tire, and took 1st place with a new PR of 16:14.8. Congratulations Dan! Junior Charlie Cavell stayed so close behind Dan that he might have been mistaken for Dan’s shadow, had the cloudy day permitted any shadows. Charlie dropped another 6 seconds from his PR on the way to a 2nd place finish in 16:18.5. Charlie is having a great season, and has already dropped over 38 seconds from last year’s PR. Dan and Charlie’s top-seven finishes earned them the honor of being named to the “All-SEC Team”.
After this dynamic duo’s one-two finish, a glance down the final stretch found three Pioneers on the path emerging from the brush in quick succession: Senior Paul Versluis in 9th place with a time of 16:42, Junior Eric Hubbard right on his heels in 10th place with a new PR of 16:43 (-12 seconds), and Junior David Cogswell in 11th place with a new PR of 16:45 (-18 seconds), almost a minute faster than last year’s PR and under the 17-minute mark for the first time. Senior Mike Weisbuch took 14th place in17:01 and Junior Erik Levinsohn took 18th place in 17:20. Great race everyone!
This is the first time all season that Pioneer has had their top-five finishers all under 17 minutes, and the spread in times from first through fifth places was an incredible 30 seconds, the smallest this season. Congratulations to all of you! Now the Pioneers need to build this win into the momentum that will carry them on to victory at Regionals and beyond, with one more chance to challenge Pinckney at the State Finals.

Junior Varsity highlights
The Pioneer JVs also had a great day at Hudson Mills, including 5 runners in the top 10, another ten runners placing in the top 50 and 10 PRs. This despite waiting around in the chilling cold for another hour after the Varsity ran. Senior Austin Taylor captured 1st place with a new PR of 17:04 (-15 seconds). Freshman Nick Kern took 5th place in a fine time of 17:17 and Senior Captain Jamie Fogel was back in top form, finishing in 7th place with a time of 17:27. Junior Taylor Deluca was right behind him in 8th place with a time of 17:33, and Freshman Adam Kern took 10th with a new PR of 17:38 (-8 seconds). Freshman Andy Sanz-Guerrero was Pioneer’s next finisher, in 17th place with a new PR of 17:59 (-7 seconds). Congratulations for crossing that 18-minute mark for the first time, Andy.
Also posting new PRs today among the JV ranks were: David Wallington (34th place, 18:25, -19 seconds!), Junior Sean Beck (45th place, 18:49, -39 seconds!), Freshman Aaron Trierweiler (49th place, 18:57, -28 seconds!), Freshman Kevin Chaperon (50thplace, 18:58, -18 seconds!), Freshman Aaron Kurz (113th, 207, -18 seconds), Freshman Michael Sullivant (118th, 21:08, -27 seconds!), and Sophomore Matt Lerner (157th, 25:49, -41 seconds!) Sophomore Chris Cain had his best race so far this season, moving up on the honor roll with a time of 22:01. It’s nice to see so many Pioneers working hard to improve their times as the season draws to a close. Sophomore Brian Diehr started the race but was injured mid-way through and was unable to continue to the finish line – tough luck after setting a new PR at the previous race.
The JV has one more chance to compete this season – at Regionals. At the pace these guys have been improving, we look forward to many more new PRs on October 28th to end this very successful season.
