SEC Jamboree #2 at Adrian

Varsity highlights

The SEC Jamboree #2 was not to go in the record books as a fast race.  With not a single PR in the varsity ranks (and only one in JV), Pioneer still got it done, beating second place Saline by 12 points.  After Jam #1, we might have expected Bedford to be the real threat, but they were a distant third, 21 points behind Pioneer.

For the first time in his high school cross country career, Sophomore Dan Culbertson (16:46) took home a first place finish.   Congrats, Dan!  We all knew this would be your race.  Junior Charlie Cavell (17:13) continues to be a big performer, taking a 4^th place finish.  Seniors Paul Versluis (17:16) and Mike Weisbuch (17:26) finished in the top 10, coming in 7^th and 10^th. Coming off an injury, Junior Eric Hubbard (17:29) still managed to cross the finish line in 11^th place as fifth man for Pioneer.  Junior Erik Levinsohn (17:41) took 15^th; Senior Austin Taylor (17:50) came in 17^th;  Junior David Cogswell (18:19) was 19^th; Senior Jamie Fogel (18:32) finished in 23^rd; and Freshman Nick Kern (20:11) in his first varsity race, took 34^th.

Congrats, Pioneer varsity!    We look forward to Portage, where Pioneer will be competing against powerhouses Dexter and Pinkney.  It should be a great and exciting race!

Junior Varsity highlights

The course at Heritage Park tested the endurance of all runners today, including our JVs.  Running without 3 of the JV’s usual top runners (who moved up to Varsity for today’s 10-man Varsity race), the JV squad got off to a somewhat slow start behind a crowd of Saline JV runners.  Despite the missing leadership, humid air and sandy soil, our JV fought back and passed several Saline runners as the race progressed.  The “killer hill” on the back part of the course was a challenge to all runners, especially to first year runners who had never experienced anything equivalent in competition before.  Congratulations to Adam Kern , who claimed 4^th place with a time of 18:38, only 10 seconds off his PR, Nate Karr who finished 7^th with a time of 18:57,  Jon Henrichs in 11^th place with a time of 19:09 and Andy Sanz-Guerrero in 12^th with a time of 19:11,  Sean Beck (16^th place with a new PR time of 19:44), Shohei Azuma (19^th place with a time of 19:49) , Max King (19^th place with a time of 19:57) and Kevin Chaperon 22^nd place with a time of 19:57).  Also, we welcome German exchange student Simon Thiel, who ran his first race for Pioneer.
