Don Baese Carson City Invitational

September 30, 2006

Varsity highlights

Two years ago, the last time Pioneer ran at the Don Baese Carson City Invitational, the day was a “beautiful crisp, clear fall day” and Pioneer captured the Division 1 championship by beating runner-up Rockford by 30 points.  This year was not to be a repeat of 2004.  The Varsity ran in a downpour of rain, yet the course was fast, and Pioneer had some stellar performances (6 PRs!).  Although Pioneer had the fastest average time of any team in the Silver Race (16:46.5), the quirks of point-scoring left them just short of repeating their victory.  This time it was Rockford who took home the victory by five slim points.

Sophomore Dan Culbertson had a tremendous race, staying with the top five runners and ultimately putting considerable distance between himself and the next runner, placing 2nd in a new PR of 16:15.    Junior Charlie Cavell was also impressive, moving steadily up to finish in 11th place with a PR of 16:37.  Seniors Paul Versluis (16:48) and Mike Weisbuch 16:52), running solidly, set PRs as well and finished 18th and 20.th.   Senior Jamie Fogel  (17:20) also smashed his PR and took 47th place.  Rounding out the varsity were Senior Austin Taylor (17:28) with another PR and a 59th place finish and Junior Eric Hubbard (17:35), coming in at 66th.

After this disappointing second place finish, the varsity is certain to come out even stronger for Jamboree #2 at Adrian on Tuesday.  Watch out Bedford, Saline, and Adrian!  Pioneer intends to win big!

The Carson City meet was unusual, in that it split the freshmen into a separate race from the rest of the JV.  Pioneer runners won both races, another mark of just how strong the team will be in years to come.  Individual places and team scores may not seem to add up correctly, because some other teams ran fewer than 5 men, which means that their places are disregarded for team-scoring purposes.

Junior Varsity highlights

The rain started as their race ended, but the Pioneers dominated the JV event at this meet.  Junior Erik Levinsohn literally ran away with this race, taking first place with a new PR of 16:59, dipping under the 17 minute mark for the first time while chopping 54 seconds from his previous PR.  His closest competition was our own David Cogswell, who finished second and registered his own PR of 17:26, 16 seconds below his previous PR.  Jon Henrichs finished 6th, in a time of 17:50, knocking 21 seconds off his previous PR.  Kinshuk Rajan finished right behind, finishing 7th with a time of 17:53, 39 seconds faster than his previous PR.  Hayden Spitzley dropped 55 seconds from his old PR to earn 27th place in a time of 18:27.  David Wallington dropped 46 seconds on his way to a 39th place finish time of 18:43.  Neil Keicher was close behind him in 41st, with a time of 18:46.  Congratulations to the many JV runners who set new PRs at this race (see the list below).  Now we know what you are capable of achieving!

Freshmen Race highlights

In cool, damp weather, our Pioneer freshmen started off the day for us by winning the freshman-only race.  Nick Kern claimed 2nd place with a new PR of 17:30, and 15 seconds later Nate Karr claimed 4th in 17:45(PR).  Andy Sanz-Guerrero’s 9th place finish and Adam Kern’s 10th place finish gave us 4 runners in the top ten!  Other runners under the twenty-minute mark were Brendan Pauley(18:44), Shohei Azuma(19:14), Kevin Chaperon(19:16), Kosta Roumanis(19:20), Kiowa Jones(19:20).  Caleb Fogel ran well in his first high school race, with a time of 19:29 – welcome Caleb!  Be sure to look at those new PRs listed below - many of our freshmen knocked a minute or more off their previous best times.  Congratulations, freshmen – and keep those new lower times coming!
