Varsity Highlights
The Ann Arbor Pioneer varsity team took the Division I Nike-Holly Invitational crown for the third year in a row. Unlike last year, where they won by only one point, this year it was a decisive win, with 55 points separating Pioneer from second place Howell.
Last year, Pioneer was impressive with three finishers in the top ten. Although we only had one top ten finisher this year, the point total was 85 this year as compared to 86 last year. It was the strength of the team as a whole that carried the day.
Sophomore Dan Culbertson was that top ten runner, finishing 5th in a time of 16:49. The top ten barely eluded Senior Paul Versluis, finishing in 11th place in 17:08. Senior Mike Weisbuch and Junior Charlie Cavell both clocked times of 17:29, with Mike credited with a 19th place finish and Charlie at 20th. Junior Eric Hubbard rounded out the scoring, finishing 30th in a time of 17:38. Junior Taylor DeLuca (17:42) in 33rd was close on his heels. Junior Erik Levinsohn took 44th place in 17:58 (that was three places better than last year’s fifth man!). For the first time since 2001, all seven varsity runners finished in under 18 minutes at this invitational meet. Congrats to all the varsity team for working together as a team!

Junior Varsity Highlights
The Pioneer JV squad raced before the Varsity at this meet, and they completely dominated their Division 1 JV race. They swept the first 6 places, earning that much-dreamed-about perfect score of 15 points. What a great example of teamwork to set for the Varsity!
Senior Austin Taylor took the lead early in the race and never relinquished it, claiming 1st place with a time of 17:47, only 2 seconds off his PR. Senior Captain Jamie Fogel took second place with a time of 18:05, leading the cluster of Pioneer JVs who finished during the next moments. Junior David Cogswell placed 3rd with a time of 18:11. Freshman Nick Kern took 4th place with a time of 18:20, dropping 23 seconds from his Personal Record. Freshman Nate Karr also chopped 12 seconds off his PR to land in 5th place with a time of 18:21. Junior Jonathan Henrichs followed in 6th place with a time of 18:31, Junior Kinshuk Rajan placed 9th with a time of 18:39 and Adam Kern took 10th place with a time of 18:48. Eight runners in the top ten makes for very happy coaches. Congratulations to all of you.
Track standout Junior Chris Fortson made his cross-country debut at this race with a respectable time of 20:39. Eleven first-season JVs set new PRs at this race, and some of those improvements are huge, as a quick glance down the list will show. This is proof that all those hours of practice are starting to pay big dividends for our new runners. Keep up the good work!
