SEC Jamboree # 1 at Pioneer

September 12, 2006

Varsity highlights

For the first time since 2002, Pioneer hosted a cross country meet on its course and the weather decided to mark this momentous occasion.   Resembling a men’s steeplechase, the runners were splattered with mud, while faithful spectators held tight to their umbrellas.

As has been the tradition over the last several years, this opening SEC Jamboree included both the Red and White divisions.  There was little doubt powerhouse Dexter would win handily, as they did last year.  The big question was “who would take second?”  Once again, Pioneer pulled it off with Bedford (fellow Red division team) nipping closely at their heals.  This year the point difference between Pioneer and Bedford dropped from 10 points (last year) to 8 points.   The gap is closing and we now know Bedford is a real threat.

Sophomore Dan Culbertson ran in a sea of maroon and yellow, hanging with the Dexter guys, eventually placing 4th with a time of 16:32.  Congrats to Dan on an outstanding race!  Senior Paul Versluis brought home the 10th place spot in a time of 17:17.  Junior Taylor DeLuca took the 15th place spot, in 17:27.  Juniors Eric Hubbard (17:32) and Charlie Cavell (17:33) finished in 17th and 18th.  Senior Mike Weisbuch pulled in at 21st place in 17:42.  And Erik Levinsohn, ankle still wrapped, came in 25th with a time of 17:53, setting a new PR by 6 seconds!

JV Highlights

While the Varsity squad completed its race before the wet weather hit, the JV race was

run in a steady rain, with water on the course from an earlier downpour contributing to the muddy path.  Undaunted by the adverse conditions facing them, the JV tied their spikes securely and rose to the occasion, with 20 Pioneers posting times of under 21 minutes.

Seven JV runners posted times well under the 19 minute mark and less than a minute off the average time of our Varsity squad at this meet.  Senior Austin Taylor’s last-minute kick gave him the lead during the last 200 meters to win the JV event with a time of 18:00 - congratulations!  Junior David Cogswell placed 5th with a time of 18:11, Senior Captain Jamie Fogel took 7th place in 18:21 and Senior Captain Mac McDonald-Wilkins claimed 8th place with a time of 18:23.  Junior Kinshuk Rajan took 11th place with a new PR of 18:32 (-3 seconds) and Freshman Nate Karr’s 18:33 brought him 12th place as well as a new PR (-28 seconds).  Junior Jonathan Henrichs was right behind them in 13th place with a time of 18:34.

Six additional freshmen also set new PR’s at this race despite the conditions:  Hayden Spitzley, Andy Sanz-Guerrero, Shoehei Azuma, Aaron Trierweiler, Jonathan Diep and Mike Sullivant.  It’s nice to see those times starting to shrink.  Running in their first race for Pioneer were Junior Arthur Huerta and Freshman George Lucero - what an extreme initiation to the team!
